Keeping a smoke alarm in working condition saved the life of a Lake of Bays resident.
The Huntsville/Lake of Bays Fire Department responded to a structure fire on Brunel Road in Lake of Bays on Feb. 25 at 12:10 a.m.
Steve Markham, the department’s public education/fire prevention officer, said the lone male occupant was alerted by working smoke alarms inside the home, which activated and provided early warning. He exited the residence and called 911.
Firefighters from Baysville, Port Cunnington and Hillside responded with nine fire vehicles and 25 firefighters, including tanker support from Huntsville.
The Ontario Provincial Police, Muskoka EMS and Hydro One were also on scene.
Markham said the occupant was evaluated and treated by Muskoka EMS, but did not require hospitalization.
“The OPP took him to a hotel for the night,” he added.
Crews worked for approximately six hours to extinguish the fire and complete overhaul operations.
Markham stated there were no injuries to firefighters who battled the blaze.
The cause of the fire is unknown at this time and damage estimates are still being determined.
“It is still being investigated by the Lake of Bays fire chief,” Markham said. “(The building) was a total loss.”
The department stated this incident is an important reminder that working smoke alarms save lives. Smoke alarms are required on every level of a home and outside sleeping areas, and residents are asked to test them monthly and replace batteries as needed.
