Wasaga’s shoreline may look straight out of a winter postcard, but officials say what you see isn’t always what you get.
The Wasaga Beach Fire Department is warning residents and visitors about a hidden danger forming along the waters of Wasaga Beach Provincial Park.
Towering ice mounds and frozen shelves under the surface are capturing the attention of locals, but did you know that these beautiful mounds can conceal serious hazards?
“What looks solid and safe can quickly turn into a life-threatening situation,” stress officials in a social media warning.
As weather fluctuates and temperatures slowly rise, these natural ice formations become unstable. Holes can form suddenly, overhangs can give way without any warning, and water can collect in concealed pools below the surface.
Fire officials say the risk often isn’t obvious from a distance. These ice shelves can look strong and secure, especially when blanketed with snow—but they’re not.
The fire team is urging people to stay off the ice shelf, keep a safe distance from ice formations, supervise children near the shoreline, and follow all posted signage around the beach.
Signs have been placed by the waterfront to alert beachgoers of the hidden dangers and keep the community educated.
“No photo or adventure is worth the risk,” emphasizes the fire department.
