Quinte West Fire and Emergency Services has received a provincial grant for new gear to help protect them from harmful substances during emergencies.
The grant is for a total of $104,000 through the Ontario Fire Protection Grant, and will be used on new decontamination equipment and personal protective gear.
The grant will be used to buy three personal protective equipment cleaning extractors, which are used to safely clean and neutralize contaminants from protective gear following an emergency response. Funds will also go towards a self contained breathing apparatus washer and new particulate flash hoods.
“Protecting the health and safety of our firefighters is a top priority,” said Fire Chief John Whelan in a press release. “This funding allows the City to provide critical equipment that keeps all of the crews safe, healthy and ready to serve the community.”
The new equipment will help to minimize firefighter’s exposure to harmful substances while working, and create a safer environment.
