Secondary Suites Guides
October 17, 2019 - Secondary Suites Guides
Under the Ontario Government’s More Homes, More Choice: Ontario’s Housing Supply Action Plan (which can be found here), the Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Housing partnered with the Large Municipal Chief Building Officials Group, the Ontario building Officials Association, and the Ontario Association of Fire Chiefs to create a Secondary Suites Guidebook. This guidebook is designed for people whose homes are either detached, semi-detached, or a rowhouse and older than five years and looking to build a secondary suite in their existing residence.
It should be noted that the OAFC made two additional recommendations that were not included in this version of the guidebook but will be considered for addition should a reprint occur.
They are:
- A recommendation to install residential sprinklers; and
- A change in the language on page 14 in the carbon monoxide section. The guide currently reads “In addition to smoke alarms you may also have to install carbon monoxide alarms. They are required if your house has a furnace that uses natural gas, propane or other similar fuels.” The OAFC would like it changed to “In addition to smoke alarms, carbon monoxide alarms are required to be installed if your home has a fuel burning appliance.”
If you have any questions please contact the OAFC office at 905-426-9865
