The Bracebridge Fire Department is starting its annual door-to-door fire safety campaign.

According to town officials, the initiative, which will take place from 7 to 9 p.m. every Monday night until the end of September, aims to promote fire safety following a recent increase in residential structure fires.

The Town said uniformed firefighters will visit neighbourhoods in urban areas of Bracebridge to encourage homeowners to check their alarms. Firefighters will not be entering homes; however, homeowners can schedule follow-up appointments with fire prevention staff if needed.

Officials said the campaign seeks to remind residents of the critical importance of fire safety and of working smoke alarms following a recent increase in residential structure fires.

By law, every home in Ontario must have a working smoke alarm on every storey of their home and outside all sleeping areas.

Town officials also said if a home contains a fuel-burning appliance such as a furnace, fireplace or cook-top or has an attached garage, a carbon monoxide alarm is also required on every storey and outside of all sleeping areas. Smoke and carbon monoxide alarms should be tested monthly.

“Working smoke alarms save lives. All residents are encouraged to ensure that smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors are installed and functioning properly in their homes,,” said officials. It is also essential to have a home fire escape plan and to practice it regularly.
