A 46-year-old woman has been charged after Sault police found she had started fires inside her vehicle on two occasions.

The first time was around 5:30 p.m. on Jan. 1 when officers patrolling the 200 block of Wellington Street West saw a snow-covered, parked vehicle with its door ajar and a fire inside.

Officers approached the vehicle and spoke with a woman who was inside.

“The accused was released unconditionally and informed of nearby options for staying warm. Fire Services attended to extinguish the fire,” Sault Police said in a news release issued this morning.

On Jan. 2, officers saw fresh footprints in the snow leading to the same vehicle. An investigation revealed another fire had been started inside, police said.

“While waiting for the vehicle to be towed for public safety, officers saw the accused approach the vehicle again.”

Lucille Gingras was arrested and is charged with Arson – Damage to Property.

None of the allegations have been tested in court and the accused is considered innocent until proven guilty.

Gingras was released on an undertaking and is scheduled to appear in court on March 2.
