An Ontario Provincial Police officer alerted and helped evacuate people in a house fire in Port Dover, Ont. on Sunday.

The Norfolk County Fire Department says they responded to reports of a fire on Main Street at around 2:50 p.m. on Sunday.

Firefighters say an officer with the OPP ran to the home, alerted the occupants of a fire in their attic and helped evacuate everyone inside.

The fire department says that the attic of the home did not have a smoke alarm and the people inside were unaware of the fire until the officer alerted them.

“This incident is a reminder of why every home needs working smoke alarms on every level,” says James Robertson, Deputy Fire Chief with the Norfolk County Fire Department.

“They provide the early warning that gives you and your family precious seconds to escape.”

No injuries were reported in the fire and the cause remains under investigation.

Firefighters say the damage is estimated to cost around $50,000 but that they were able to keep the damage mostly contained to the attic and prevent it from spreading farther in the home.
