One person was treated for smoke inhalation following an early-morning battery fire at an apartment building in north London, fire officials say.

London Fire Department crews were called to a three-storey walk-up on Huron Street, just east of Adelaide Street, shortly after 8 a.m.

Witnesses reported seeing smoke billowing from an upper-level unit. They said the occupant removed a smouldering e-bike battery from the apartment and placed it on a balcony, carrying it in a pot.

The individual was assessed and treated at the scene by paramedics.

Fire officials said the incident highlights growing concerns around lithium-ion batteries. Platoon Chief Colin Shewell said such fires are increasingly common.

“These batteries are one of the fastest growing concerns in the fire service right now across Ontario, Canada and the U.S.,” Shewell said. “We want to make sure people are safe — use the proper charging systems and supervise charging at all times.”

No other injuries were reported. There is no information available about the extent of damage to the unit.
