Firefighters in Pembroke say a patient was injured after a fire broke out in the local hospital on Sunday morning.

According to a news release from the Pembroke Fire Department, firefighters received a report of a fire at the Pembroke Regional Hospital at approximately 7:51 a.m.

Firefighters arrived to find thick, dark smoke coming from the room where the fire was located. Hospital staff had evacuated the floor, the fire department said.

“We at the Pembroke Fire Department commend the staff at the (Pembroke Regional Hospital) for their response to this incident,” the fire department said. “If not for the actions of these individuals, the results would have been devastating.”

Fire crews extinguished the flames, which had been contained to one room thanks to the hospital’s sprinkler system, and the damage to other floors was limited.

Firefighters say one patient suffered burn injuries during the incident.

“This incident reinforces the importance of fire drills, fire safety planning and fire extinguisher training for all buildings, not just the hospital. The responding staff followed their training and saved numerous lives.”

An investigation is underway to determine the cause of the fire.
