An industrial fire broke out Tuesday night at IMT Elemental in Thorold along the Welland Canal, south of the Allanburg Bridge.
Workers tell CHCH News that while the heat treatment facility constantly uses fire for its operations, something burned for an unusually long time.
Fire crews arrived on scene just before 11 p.m., with crews being called in from Niagara fire and other neighbouring cities to get the intense fire under control.
Thorold Deputy Fire Chief Mike DeGasperis says the exact cause of the blaze is undetermined, though it is not considered suspicious.
No firefighters or staff at IMT Elemental were injured as a result of the fire.
DeGasperis says crews were on scene for about five hours. He cannot confirm the total damages but estimates it to be over $7 million.
