Fourteen people have been displaced, Hamilton's fire chief says, after a townhouse complex fire on the West Mountain.

Firefighters responded to 48 Caroga Court around 12 a.m. Monday, Chief Dave Cunliffe said in a news release.

There were no injuries reported, Cunliffe said, but one cat died.

He said firefighters reported "a well involved fire in the rear of unit two, that was rapidly extending up the exterior wall into the eaves, attic, and roof spaces" of two units.

The complex is described online as "a non-profit housing co-operative."

Residents found other accommodations: fire chief

A natural gas meter caught fire at some point during firefighting operations, Cunliffe said.

He said it took firefighters around 20 minutes to "bring the fire under control," and two units were heavily damaged.

"Preliminary damage estimates are between $1 million and $1.5 million," Cunliffe said.

All 14 residents were able to find accommodations, he said. The cause has not been determined.

The Ontario Office of the Fire Marshall was notified due to the extent of the fire.
