Firefighters spent over an hour battling a blaze in the rain after a fire broke out at a home in Ottawa’s rural south end on Sunday.

The Ottawa Fire Services say multiple 911 callers reported a deck on fire in the 3600 block of River Road near Osgoode shortly before 1:45 p.m.

Firefighters found the side of the single-family home on fire with flames spreading to the garage.

The fire occurred in an area with no hydrants, requiring crews to use a shuttle system to bring water to the scene.

Firefighters were met with several hazards on scene, including live underground hydro wires.

The blaze was put out shortly before 3:20 p.m. Victim Services was called in to assist residents who will be displaced.

Road closures are in effect in the area. An Ottawa police cruiser was spotted blocking off River Road near Dalmeny Road.

An investigation into the origin and cause of the fire is ongoing.
