Firefighters rescued a resident found unconscious in a seven-storey apartment building fire on Sunday night in Centretown.

It was around 9:30 p.m. when crews were called the building in the 200 block of Gladstone Avenue. Minutes later, they arrived on scene to confirm active alarms going off throughout the building.

Ottawa Fire Services (OFS) said an alarm was triggered on the fourth floor. There, firefighters were met with zero visibility due to heavy black smoke. Crews were able to locate the fire in a unit and get a hose line inside.

While searching the apartment, an unconscious resident was located and carried down to the lobby. Firefighters began assessing and treating their injuries.

Flames were located in the kitchen of the apartment and were quickly extinguished. The fire was declared under control about half an hour after the original call.

Secondary crews searched all units on the fourth floor and ensured every resident was evacuated safely. One other resident was treated for smoke inhalation and transferred to paramedics.

People were able to return to their units ones the smoke had cleared. OFS said a fire investigator was called to determine the cause of the fire.

The current conditions of the two residents is unknown at the time of writing.
