Residents of a Newmarket home southwest of Bayview Avenue and Mulock Drive have been displaced following an electrical fire.
Central York Fire Services firefighters responded to the fire on Heddle Crescent on May 15 at 4:11 p.m., a statement from the department issued May 19 said.
When crews arrived, they saw smoke coming from the house.
The fire started in the basement and spread through the walls up to the first and second floors.
Residents were alerted to the blaze by smoke detectors and were able to get out of the home without injuries.
The fire department offered these safety tips:
- Ontario law requires a homeowner to install and maintain working smoke alarms on every storey of a home and outside all sleeping areas. It is also law to have working carbon monoxide detectors outside sleeping areas.
- When a fire occurs, the top priority is to get outside.
- If possible, when you leave, close the door behind you to help contain the fire. Then, meet at a designated safe spot outside the home. Call 911 once you are safely outside.
- Make and practise a home escape plan. Find two ways out of each room.
- Test that your smoke alarms are working on every storey of your home.
- Designate a safe place to meet outside.
- Teach children when and how to call 911.
