Firefighters were able to liberate one person and two pets entrapped by a house fire last week in the Minnow Lake area.

Jesse Oshell, deputy chief with Greater Sudbury Fire Services, said all four units within the city core responded around 8 a.m. Tuesday to the blaze, which occurred at a residence on Herbert Street, off Second Avenue.

The first crews to arrive were “met with heavy smoke and confirmed a working basement fire,” according to an account at the Sudbury Professional Firefighters page on social media. “Crews quickly made entry to conduct an interior attack and primary search.”

Two occupants escaped with injuries and one occupant was located and rescued by firefighters, the account states. All three were taken to hospital by Sudbury paramedics.

“Two pets were also rescued,” the firefighters said.

Crews were able to contain the fire to the basement and prevent further spread.

Oshell said the residents were treated in hospital for smoke inhalation but he did not have any updates on their condition.

The deputy chief said there was fire and smoke damage throughout the residence, with damage likely in the range of $250,000 or more.

The cause of the fire has not yet been determined.
