The rapid response by London firefighters saved two cats after a fire in a multi-unit home in London’s Woodfield neighbourhood Sunday morning.
Just after 8:30 am, a fire broke out in an apartment of an eight-unit home.
After hearing alarms and seeing smoke, a neighbour called 911.
“We had a very rapid response,” said District Chief Todd Rannie of the London Fire Department.
“Engine one and Engine four were here very quickly. Crews arrived to encounter heavy smoke coming from the front of the building. They entered the building and found a fire. All units were searched and the fire was contained to the one unit”.
All residents were able to self-evacuate, however the tenant of the unit where the fire originated was not home at the time.
Multiple pets were removed from the building including a lizard, multiple cats and a dog. Firefighters and a paramedic were working on saving animals when CTV News arrived on scene.“ The one unit had two cats which had to be resuscitated,” said Rannie.
Paramedics suggest the animals be taken to a veterinarian to be checked out.
It’s believed the fire started on the stove and damage is estimated at around $10,000.
The residents of the other seven units should be able to return today after ventilation is complete.
