“When crews arrived, there was debris scattered in both northbound lanes and the southbound lanes.”

Those were the words of Georgian Bay Fire Chief Chad Dowell after his crew rushed to an overnight vehicle fire that claimed the lives of two people.

Police say officers arrived in the area shortly after 3 a.m. Thursday to reports of a single-vehicle crash involving an SUV on fire near Crooked Bay Road in Georgian Bay.

The two occupants of the vehicle were pronounced dead at the scene. Investigators say their identities are being withheld, pending notification of next of kin.

Officials say the OPP traffic unit was on location working to reconstruct what happened.

Highway 400 was closed for several hours in both directions between White Falls Road and Muskoka Road 38. It has since reopened.

Police say the investigation is ongoing. Anyone with information or video footage is asked to contact the OPP at 1-888-310-1122.
