Welding spark triggers fire at Windsor plant

Windsor firefighters were called to an upgraded structure fire in an industrial area on the west side of the city.

Firefighters arrived to light smoke at the Hearn plant on GN Booth Drive before 8:30a.m. Thursday morning.

Fire officials say the building had been evacuated after a welding job created a material ignition which led to the fire. It was under control by 9:30 a.m.

“Right now we have one person transported (to hospital) from smoke inhalation. We have one being assessed with EMS and we do have one person that was treated and released,” said fire prevention officer John Smith.

No estimated damage has been determined. The Ministry of Labour has been notified as work continues.

Fire officials are asking the public to avoid the area.
