One person is dead after a fire broke out at a seniors home in downtown Toronto on Sunday night.
Emergency services were called to 423 Yonge St. at around 9:50 p.m. for a fire in an eighth-floor unit.
A Toronto Fire Services (TFS) spokesperson said crews forced entry into the unit, which had heavy black smoke and heat.
During search and rescue operations, the occupant of the unit was located in their bedroom and life-saving measures were performed.
The person was then transferred into the care of paramedics, but later died from injuries sustained in the fire, according to the TFS spokesperson.
The fire, which was contained to the one unit, has been extinguished.
Fire Chief Jim Jessop on Monday morning said the building is a Toronto Seniors Housing Corporation address.
TFS investigators and the Ontario Fire Marshal are now at the scene to determine the cause, origin and circumstances of the blaze.
