A fire on Brock Street gutted two houses and damaged at least one other Thursday, leaving residents of a hard-hit neighbourhood facing the task of rebuilding yet again.
City police said one person was asleep in one of the homes and was rushed out to safety by an officer. Both were treated in hospital for smoke inhalation.
The fire brought out a massive response from the Brockville Fire Department, which called in help from the neighbouring Elizabethtown-Kitley department.
While it was too early for precise details, including the cause of the fire, authorities said there were no life-threatening injuries.
The fire near the intersection of Brock and Perth Streets, which covered the south-end neighbourhood in thick smoke, happened across the street from a massive blaze that destroyed an Outlaws Motorcycle Club clubhouse in the summer of 2023.
Brockville Police Service Insp. Darryl Boyd said Thursday evening there was no indication of foul play in this latest incident. However, police said Friday morning investigators were not ruling anything out yet.
“The cause of the fire has not yet been determined and is being treated as suspicious until proven otherwise,” said police.
