Dozens of firefighters battling 3-alarm blaze at Etobicoke waste disposal plant

Dozens of firefighters are working to extinguish a three-alarm fire at a waste disposal plant in Etobicoke Wednesday morning.

Crews responded to the industrial fire at Shorncliffe and Bramshott roads around 5 a.m., Toronto Fire division commander of operations Robert Hewson told reporters at the scene.

He said the fire is now contained within the building — a waste depot for construction material.

“We have a good handle on the fire,” Hewson said just before 8 a.m., adding that Toronto Fire has begun to pull back resources, though crews are continuing to use aerial equipment to fight the blaze.

Toronto Fire said it initially sent about 80 firefighters to the scene.

No injuries have been reported.

The cause of the fire is unknown at this time, but there is nothing to immediately indicate anything suspicious, Toronto police spokesperson Laura Brabant said in an email.

Part of Shorncliffe Road near the fire is now blocked off and drivers are encouraged to find alternate routes Wednesday morning, police said in a post on X.
