Your Neighbourhood Credit Union (YNCU) is inviting families to lace up their skates and share the ice with local community heroes during a special Motivate 2 Skate: Community Heroes Edition this March Break.

The two-hour community skate will take place on Friday, March 20, from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at the YNCU Soo Pee Wee Arena, bringing together families and local first responders for a morning of skating, appreciation, and community connection.

Local firefighters, police officers, paramedics, and healthcare professionals have been invited to attend and skate alongside families, giving children the chance to meet some of the people who serve and protect their community every day.

“Motivate 2 Skate has always been about bringing people together and creating positive experiences on the ice,” says Shaylan Spurway, Manager of Communications and Community Impact at YNCU. “This special community heroes edition allows families to thank the people who work hard every day to keep our communities safe.”

If available and weather permitting, emergency service vehicles such as a fire truck, police cruiser, or ambulance will also be on display outside the arena, giving children the opportunity to explore the vehicles and learn more about the important work first responders do in the community.

“Events like this are a reminder that strong communities are built through the people who serve them every day,” adds Spurway. “We’re proud to create opportunities for families to connect, celebrate and show appreciation for our local heroes.”

Motivate 2 Skate began in Sault Ste. Marie in 2022 and has since expanded it to communities across Ontario. The program focuses on creating inclusive opportunities for children and families to enjoy skating while strengthening community connections.

The event is free to attend and open to families across the community.
