One man is dead after police say a tent caught fire in a wooden area in St. Catharines, Ont.

Niagara regional police say they were conducting a patrol around 3:15 a.m. Tuesday morning when officers located a "large active fire involving a tent" at Mountain Locks Park, along Merritt Trail.

St. Catharines Fire Services arrived and extinguished the fire, but the tent had already been "consumed by fire," said St. Catharines deputy fire chief Trevor Parker.

Niagara Regional Police Service's criminal investigative branch and the Ontario fire marshal's office are investigating, police said.
