The City of Greater Sudbury serves a population of approximately 180,000 residents and is committed to delivering high-quality, responsive and professional emergency services. Our Fire Services Division operates as a composite fire department, delivering a full range of services, including fire suppression, emergency response, fire prevention and public education, through a combination of full-time and volunteer firefighters.
The Opportunity
The City of Greater Sudbury is seeking a dynamic Deputy Fire Chief to provide strategic and operational leadership for the Fire Services Division.
The Deputy Fire Chief assists the Fire Chief in the overall management and administration of a composite fire department, balancing the operational, administrative and cultural needs of both career and volunteer personnel. This position provides leadership across operations, training, fire prevention, health and safety, mechanical and administrative functions, and acts as the Fire Chief in their absence. The successful candidate will foster a culture of safety, professionalism, accountability and continuous improvement.
What You’ll Do
- Lead and execute the Fire Services business plan, aligning service delivery, performance measures and budgets.
- Provide overall direction and management of fire operations to ensure high-quality, efficient emergency response.
- Oversee emergency preparedness, major incident response and assume Incident Command as required.
- Manage divisional finances, staffing, facilities, apparatus and equipment.
- Ensure compliance with all applicable legislation, regulations and fire service standards.
- Prepare reports and presentations for Council, senior leadership and the public.
- Oversee the Fire Services training complex and support continuous improvement across the division.
What You Bring
- Post-secondary education in fire administration, public administration, emergency management or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience, is preferred.
- NFPA 1001 (Firefighter) Level 1 and Level 2 certification, or equivalency, is preferred.
- NFPA 1021 (Fire Officer) Level 1 and Level 2 certification, or equivalency is preferred.
- Additional Fire Officer certification, such as NFPA 1021 Fire Officer III or IV, or equivalent, is an asset.
- Valid Ontario Class DZ driver’s licence is required.
- A minimum of six years of senior leadership experience in a large, unionized organization, including at least four years in fire protection services.
- Demonstrated experience in municipal fire service operations, administration and emergency response.

Salary and Additional Benefits
The range of pay for this position is $148,790.88 to $175,227.57 per year. We also offer a comprehensive health benefits plan (100 per cent employer-paid), an OMERS pension plan, life insurance, an Employee Assistance Program and more.
