Crews responded to see a nearly destroyed vehicle in Ottawa’s east end with a trapped person inside.
Firefighters were called around 2:03 p.m. for a head-on collision at the intersection of Regional Road 174 and McTeer Road in Cumberland. Teams arrived to find two vehicles with significant damage to the front ends and the driver’s side damage. Debris was scattered across the roadway.
The Rockland Fire Department was also on scene helping teams from Ottawa.
One driver was trapped and could not escape. Firefighters stabilized the vehicle and started the process of extrication using specialized tools. They needed to remove the driver’s side front door and rear doors. They cut through a post to create a wide enough opening.
While this was happening, teams needed to be mindful of the vehicle’s battery, which was fully out and could have started a brush fire.
By 2:30 the driver was removed onto a backboard and was assessed by Ottawa paramedics.
