Fire Prevention Officer/Deputy Fire Chief
Job Description
The Fire Prevention Officer / Deputy Fire Chief (FPO/DFC) is a senior leadership role within the Municipality of Magnetawan Fire Department, supporting the Fire Chief in the delivery of fire protection, prevention, training, and community education services. The FPO/DFC ensures the department operates efficiently, safely, and in compliance with the Ontario Fire Code, Fire Protection and Prevention Act, and related legislation.
This position is responsible for conducting inspections, enforcing fire safety regulations, reviewing and approving fire safety plans, and implementing community risk reduction initiatives. The FPO/DFC also oversees training and professional development for volunteer firefighters, ensuring personnel meet current standards, maintain accurate records, and are prepared for emergency response. Acting as a mentor, the FPO/DFC fosters a culture of safety, professionalism, and continuous improvement within the department.
The FPO/DFC assumes full operational responsibility in the Fire Chief’s absence, including emergency incident command, departmental decision-making, and administrative oversight. This role also serves as a key liaison with the public, municipal council, and external agencies, delivering fire prevention education and representing the department with professionalism, leadership, and commitment to community safety.

CREDENTIAL/EXPERIENCE REQUIRED
- NFPA 1001 Firefighter I & II (or provincial equivalent).
- NFPA 1031 Fire Inspector I (minimum); Fire Inspector II considered an asset.
- NFPA 1035 Fire and Life Safety Educator I (or willingness to obtain).
- NFPA 1021 Fire Officer I (minimum); Fire Officer II preferred.
- Demonstrated experience in fire service operations; experience in a supervisory or leadership role is an asset.
- Strong knowledge of the Ontario Fire Code, FPPA, and related standards.
- Excellent communication, organizational, and report-writing skills.
- Valid Class DZ license (or ability to obtain), Must have a clean current Police Records Check and maintain same. Any and all changes must be disclosed to the Municipality immediately.
- Must have clean current Driver’s Abstract and maintain same. Any and all changes must be disclosed to the Municipality immediately.
- Knowledge of Municipality boundaries and civic address system.
- Strong organizational skills to prioritize workload and perform tasks without direct supervision.
- Live within Municipality boundaries or be able to demonstrate the ability to respond to emergency incidents within a prescribed timeframe.
- Good judgment and decision-making skills.
- Strong written and oral communication skills.
- Strong leadership skills with the ability to influence decisions and effect change.
