In honour of October’s Fire Prevention Month, members of the Sault Ste. Marie Fire Services conducted specialized high-rise training exercises on Oct. 23 and 29, sharpening their response capabilities for emergencies in tall buildings throughout the city.
One of the featured training sites was the Royal Canadian Legion’s Veterans Housing building, a nine-storey complex that provides homes for local veterans and seniors.
During the drills, firefighters tested extended ladder operations—successfully reaching not only the ninth floor but also the rooftop terrace, proving they could respond effectively should the need ever arise.
Residents and staff who observed the training expressed relief and gratitude. The demonstration offered them a rare behind-the-scenes look at how their local firefighters coordinate a high-rise response.
Staff members also gained insight into how elevators are controlled during a fire, how airflow and smoke movement are managed in stairwells, and how emergency crews maintain safe evacuation routes under pressure.
The Veterans Housing building itself is equipped with state-of-the-art fire suppression technology designed to detect and extinguish fires quickly. Still, witnessing the skill and precision of Sault Ste. Marie’s firefighters provided an extra measure of comfort.
“It’s reassuring to know our local firefighters can reach every floor and are familiar with our building,” said one staff member.
“Their professionalism and preparedness give everyone peace of mind.”
As Fire Prevention Month concludes, Sault Ste. Marie Fire Services remind all citizens that awareness and preparation remain our best defence against fire.
