Clocks go back on Sunday

It’s that time of year!

Quinte West Fire and Emergency Services is once again reminding the community that Daylight Savings Time ends on Sunday, November 2nd at 2 a.m. Make sure you turn your clock back one hour before you go to sleep.

Fire officials are also asking the community to take some time and replace batteries in your smoke and carbon monoxide alarms.

“Most fatal home fires happen where there is no working smoke alarm. Take this opportunity to ensure your smoke and carbon monoxide alarms are powered and ready to protect you and your family,” said Quinte West Deputy Fire Chief Rick Caddick, in a statement.

Officials note that by law, smoke alarms must be working and in place on every level of a home and outside or ideally in, every sleeping space.

“Homes with fuel-burning appliances, fireplaces, or attached garages must also have carbon monoxide alarms located outside sleeping areas. Carbon monoxide is a colourless and odourless gas that can be deadly if undetected. Having functioning carbon monoxide alarms, combined with regular maintenance of fuel-burning appliances, helps save lives. Residents are reminded that removing or disabling smoke or carbon monoxide alarms is illegal. Violating the Ontario Fire Code may result in fines or charges under the Fire Protection and Prevention Act. For questions about testing your smoke alarm or having it inspected, please contact Fire Station 1, at 613-392-6557,” added staff in their morning statement.
