Platoon Chief
Job Description
Milton Fire & Rescue Services is currently accepting applications for the full-time unionized position of Platoon Chief.
Reporting to the Deputy Fire Chief, this position is responsible for the planning, organizing, coordinating and supervision of the day-to-day operations of assigned staff ensuring a high degree of operational readiness and excellence be delivered to the community. The Platoon Chief contributes to the development and implementation of strategic goals and objectives; models and promotes integrity, trust, respect and safety in the workplace and within the community. Work involves responding to emergency incidents as an Incident Commander, implementing effective strategies and tactics to manage and successfully mitigate emergency scenes and is responsible for various projects and programs.
Key Responsibilities
Leadership
- Provide leadership and manage the activities of Platoon Captains
- Regularly attend all stations to provide supervision, promote a positive work environment while providing guidance and leadership
- Ensure the consistent enforcement of operations policies and guidelines
- Ensure proper inspections, maintenance and care of stations, apparatus and equipment
- Complies with and assumes appropriate supervisory responsibility for health and safety practices of the Fire Department in accordance with standard operating guidelines and the Occupational Health & Safety Act
Incident Response
- Respond to emergency incidents, assume the role of Incident Commander (where warranted) ensuring the MFRS Incident Command System is being utilized and operating effectively
- Monitor all incident responses ensuring appropriate resources have been dispatched while assuring adequate community coverage as per MFRS practices
Training and Operational Activities
- Actively participates in training to stay abreast of current trends, best practices, industry standards, applicable legislation and current Standard Operating Policies and Guidelines
- Ensure assigned training is conducted and recorded by personnel under their command
Programs, Maintenance and Asset Management
- Organize, implement and manage projects/programs; in support of MFRS operations
- Research, develop and prepare reports summarizing findings
- Responsible for the operational condition, maintenance, inventory and security of all stations, apparatus, equipment and other departmental assets; ensuring efficient cost delivery of fire services to the community
- Assists in the evaluation, planning and acquisition of goods and services, inventory management and the distribution of departmental supplies
Administration
- Scheduling and absence management
- Ensure all personal injuries and accidents/damage involving property is documented, investigated and reported
- Contribute to the development and updating of Standard Operating Policies & Guidelines and other department procedures to enhance operational efficiencies
- Performs other duties as assigned in accordance with departmental objectives
Education and Experience
Education
- Ontario Secondary School Graduation Diploma
- Post-secondary education in Fire Sciences, Public Administration or related discipline is preferred
Experience
- 15 years municipal fire department service in a full-time capacity in the suppression division
- Eight (8) years supervisory experience in the suppression division as a Captain, District Chief, Platoon Chief or combination thereof
- Eight (8) years supervisory experience in the suppression division as a Captain, District Chief, Platoon Chief or combination thereof
OR
- 20 years municipal fire department service in a composite department in the suppression division
- Ten (10) years supervisory experience in the suppression division as a Captain, District Chief, Platoon Chief or combination thereof
- Currently holds the rank of District Chief/Station Chief/Platoon Chief in the suppression division
- Ten (10) years supervisory experience in the suppression division as a Captain, District Chief, Platoon Chief or combination thereof
- Management experience in a unionized fire service environment is preferred
- Project and program development is preferred
- Mechanical experience and aptitude is considered an asset
- Experience procuring equipment is preferred
- Knowledge and experience in budgeting and financial administration practices along with strategic planning is preferred
- Training and experience as a Hazardous Materials Technician is preferred
- Training and experience in advanced Extrication is preferred
- Training and experience in various Technical Rescue disciplines, including ice/water rescue, rope rescue, trench rescue and confined space rescue is preferred
Certifications and Designations
- Blue Card Incident Command Training
- NFPA 1001 Firefighter Level I
- NFPA 1072 HazMat Awareness
- NFPA 1021 Fire Officer Level II (Pro Board, IFSAC or OFMEM equivalency)
- NFPA 1041 Instructor Level 1 (Pro Board, IFSAC or OFMEM equivalency)
- NFPA 1521 Incident Safety Officer (Pro Board, IFSAC or OFMEM equivalency)
- Valid “D” Driver’s License with a “Z” endorsement with a driving record that demonstrates responsible and safe driving habits. A recent driver abstract within 30 days will be required for those selected for an interview. Persons with 4 or more demerit points need not apply.
- Current CPR and First Aid
- NFPA 1021 Fire Officer Level III (Pro Board, IFSAC or OFMEM equivalency) is preferred
Additional Skills
- Maintains knowledge of and competency of the Fire Service, Acts and Regulations, Policies, Guidelines and other directives as they pertain to day-to-day operations

- Demonstrates professional customer service with a focus on delivering services with integrity and respect

- Proficient in Microsoft Suite (Outlook, Excel, Word, OneNote, etc.)
General Information
- Salary Range: Effective March 1st, 2024 – 125% of the full-time 1st Class Firefighter wage, $139,713 – as per current Collective Agreement
- 42-hour work week assigned to the 24-hour shift schedule
- In accordance with the Corporate Criminal Record Check Policy, the position requires the incumbent to submit a Criminal Records Check with Vulnerable Sector Screening upon employment
