Firefighters successful prevented a fire in a ByWard Market business from spreading to other buildings Monday night.

The Ottawa Fire Services says it received several 9-1-1 calls just before 9:30 p.m., reporting black smoke coming from a business on William Street, near George Street.

Firefighters confirmed black smoke was coming from the two-storey building that houses Beans and Barrels café and lounge.

The fire was declared under control at 10 p.m.

“The fire was extinguished and contained to the area of origin before it could spread,” fire officials said in a media release.

According to Ottawa Fire Service photographer Scott Stilborn, the fire was contained to one unit of a multi-door residential space over the commercial building.

No injuries were reported.

An investigator was called in to search for the cause of the fire.
