Waterloo Walmart reopens after ‘act of arson’

CTV News

Walmart at Bridgeport Plaza in Waterloo will reopen at 3 p.m. Tuesday, a few days after a suspicious fire inside the store.

A spokesperson for Walmart told CTV News they look forward to welcoming customers back to the store.

“While some areas within the store will remain closed as repairs continue, we expect these areas to reopen in the coming days,” the spokesperson said.

Suspicious fire

Emergency services were called to Bridgeport Road East and Weber Street North around 10 p.m. Sunday.

Waterloo Regional Police said a fire had ignited within the store, but gave no details about what parts of the store were involved or how the fire started. The full extent of the damage is also not known.

The flames were extinguished by members of the Waterloo Fire Department and no injuries were reported.

Police said the fire is being treated as suspicious.

On Monday night, police released an image of a masked male. They said investigators are trying to identify and speak with that person as part of the investigation.

Walmart said it will take all appropriate steps to hold the person who started the fire accountable, including assessing legal options to recover damages.

“This was a criminal act of arson that will unfortunately and unfairly impact our customers, associates and the local community who rely on the store,” said the spokesperson.

Anyone with information is asked contact police.
