It's not a full-time job, but Dave Paxton says it's a way for him to stay connected to his 27-year career in firefighting.

The just-retired Thunder Bay fire chief has joined Fort Garry Fire Trucks, a Winnipeg-based manufacturer of firefighting apparatus.

Paxton, who stepped away from the Thunder Bay Fire Rescue Service last month, is the company's new Northern Ontario sales manager.

In an announcement Tuesday, the company said he's responsible for the region between Thunder Bay and Sudbury, including all communities to the north.

Paxton told Newswatch his new position is part-time, and that he'll remain in Thunder Bay.

He said Fort Garry Fire Trucks approached him with a "unique opportunity" to retain his ties to firefighting in a small way, and to help fire departments across the region plan for their future equipment acquisitions.

Paxton noted that it takes two years to build a fire truck once it's been ordered.

"Dave brings deep knowledge of the fire service — not only as a leader, but as someone who understands apparatus needs from the perspective of a user, purchaser, and decision-maker," the company stated in its announcement.
