Fire crews are cleaning up after a house fire near downtown Waterdown.

Hamilton police say the call came in around 5 a.m. from a home on Avanti Crescent, near Dundas and Mill streets.

Upon arrival, firefighters entered the residence locating a fire within a second-floor laundry room.

All occupants had self-evacuated prior to firefighters’ arrival. Crews found a clothing dryer that was on fire, which was quickly extinguished and removed from the home.

Smoke had migrated throughout the residence, requiring ventilation operations. The fire was contained to the laundry room and did not extend beyond that area.

Fire crews remained on scene to ventilate the home and confirm safe air quality readings before occupants were allowed to return.

One occupant was assessed by paramedics at the scene for reports of minor injuries. No serious injuries were reported.

The cause of the fire was determined to be an appliance malfunction involving the clothing dryer.

Estimated property damage is approximately $50,000.
