Ottawa firefighters extricate trapped driver after witnessing Carling Avenue collision

CTV News

Ottawa firefighters jumped into action to help release a driver that was caught in their vehicle following a collision on Thursday afternoon.

According to Ottawa Fire Services public information officer Nick DeFazio, a fire crew witnessed a two-vehicle collision while travelling near Carling Avenue and Merivale Road at approximately 2:40 p.m.

Firefighters immediately stopped to attend the scene, finding that air bags had deployed in both vehicles and each sustained significant damage. Each vehicle was occupied by a single driver, but one of them was trapped inside their vehicle, DeFazio said.

Firefighters began assessing and providing initial care for both drivers while additional resources were dispatched.

Crews used a hydraulic extrication tool to remove the driver’s-side door and free the trapped individual at approximately 2:50 p.m.

Ottawa paramedics say one adult woman was taken to the hospital in stable condition to treat non-life-threatening injuries.
