Throughout 2026, Bonfield Township will celebrate its volunteer firefighters with the Volunteer Firefighter of the Month program.
“Our firefighters are a cornerstone of public safety in Bonfield,” said councillor Donna Clark. “Their commitment is tremendous, because they’re often balancing family, employment and community service. We would like to recognize that.”
The idea for the monthly recognition was brought forward by councillor Steve Featherstone. During council’s regular meeting on January 13, the motion was passed.
The township noted in a release, “The community is very fortunate to have this dedicated group of volunteers to serve and protect. This program is set up to formally recognize the exceptional service, dedication, and professionalism of the firefighters, while strengthening morale, community pride and public appreciation for emergency services.”
Bonfield firefighters responded to 95 emergency calls in 2025. These included fires and fire related matters, but most calls were medical emergencies, assisting residents in urgent need of care. The Firefighter of the Month program will recognize those volunteers’ exemplary service to the community.
Winners of the award will receive a certificate from the township, and plans are underway to create a plaque for the Fire Hall, upon which a new name will be added each month. Each month the honoured firefighter will also receive a $25 gift card for Tim Hortons and a $25 gift card for Dinner Bell, which is one of the sponsors of the program, along with the Reptile Adventure Camp, owned and operated by Featherstone. Ham and Cricket, which makes cute handcrafted plush animals from socks, is also sponsoring the program.
Nominations may be submitted by the fire chief, a firefighter, or by residents. To nominate a volunteer firefighter, you can reach out to Fire Chief Sean McGee at firechief@bonfieldtownship.com, or contact a member of council. The first honouree will be announced in February.
