Local fire officials are investigating the cause of a fire that broke out Sunday night at a Peel Region public works yard on King Street in Caledon.

The Caledon fire department battled the flames for several hours, according to an emailed statement from the town’s communication department.

“The fire was reported at 10:44 p.m. on April 5 and extinguished at 9:10 a.m. on April 6,” the statement noted, adding the property was released back to the Region of Peel at that point.

According to town officials, no injuries were reported and there is no ongoing risk to the public. However, the town is urging residents to avoid the area to allow crews to continue their work safely.

The cause of the fire is under investigation, and the Ontario Fire Marshal’s Office (OFM) has been notified, the town’s statement added.

“The Ontario Fire Marshal’s office is aware of the incident (but) will not be attending,” OFM spokesperson Jim Demetriou confirmed to the Caledon Enterprise.

In a separate email statement, Kealy Dedman, commissioner of public works for Peel Region, said the region was informed about the fire “around midnight” on April 5. The extent of the damage is currently being investigated.

“The building is used primarily for road maintenance and operations so these functions will be provided from Peel’s works yard in Brampton in the short term,” Dedman stated.

The Caledon Ontario Provincial Police assisted with traffic control during the incident.

According to an email from OPP spokesperson Const. Jesse Nobleman, police were notified of the fire at the public works yard just before 11 p.m. on April 5 and “were on scene for approximately three hours” to assist with traffic control.

“At this time, we (police) have not been engaged to assist in the investigation,” Nobleman stated.
