Brantford firefighters at the scene of Wellington Street fire

Brantford firefighters are still on the scene of a Sunday night fire at a Wellington Street duplex.

Deputy Fire Chief Dwayne Armstrong said no one was injured in the fire at 25 Wellington St. Firefighters received the fire call at about 7:24 p.m.

“When we arrived smoke could be seen coming from the building,” Armstrong said. “Our firefighters had to deal with extremely cold temperatures and they did a great job preventing the fire from spreading to the building next door.”

Firefighters also had to contend with ice and remained on the scene overnight and were still there as of Monday morning.

Armstrong described the building as a residential duplex that appeared to be vacant.

This is the second major fire of 2026 for the fire department.

Multiple fire crews battled a blaze on the corner of Jarvis Street and Grand River Avenue on Jan. 4 that destroyed an old commercial building. No one was hurt in that fire.

The building was subsequently demolished and all of the remaining rubble has been removed from the property leaving the site an empty lot.
