Two firefighters remain in the hospital, after they were struck by a vehicle while they were on a call for a separate crash on Highway 47 in Uxbridge.
According to the Durham Regional Police Service (DRPS), the crash happened around 7:40 p.m. near Wagg Road and the firefighters were rushed to a Toronto-area hospital for treatment.
“The collision involved a transport truck and pick-up truck towing a trailer and is believed to be a result of hazardous road conditions due to snow and ice,” police said in a news release.
A 42-year-old firefighter was air lifted to a Toronto-area trauma centre in critical condition and is in critical but stable condition, according to police. Meanwhile, a 37-year-old fire captain was transported to a trauma centre with serious injuries.
Police also say a 54-year-old fire captain was transported to a hospital with minor injuries and has been discharged.
The transport truck driver was transported to a local hospital with minor injuries, and the driver of the SUV sustained minor injuries, according to police.
Meanwhile, Chief of Police for DRPS, Peter Moreira says this incident “underscores the danger faced by our firefighters and all emergency services when responding to a call for service.”
