Pembroke – Five people were displaced in a fire in the city last Tuesday afternoon that started in a garage and spread to the residence, causing extensive damage. Several vehicles were also destroyed.
The fire department was dispatched to the fire in the 400 block of Moffat St. at approximately 3:21 p.m. Firefighters initially responded with one truck and the duty crew but while travelling to the scene, the responding crew was informed the fire had spread to the house. The responding crew upgraded the response code and requested all available personnel be called in to assist.
On arrival, the garage, the rear of the home, and several vehicles were fully engulfed in flames. The Incident Commander was notified quickly that all occupants of the home self-evacuated. Firefighters quickly deployed defensive lines to knock down a section of the fire that was beginning to damage a neighbouring home. This home suffered exterior damage due to exposure to the fire.
Searches were conducted inside the home to ensure no one was inside.
The fire proved to be stubborn as it had penetrated the interior walls and attic of the home. Along with multiple vehicle fires at the scene, the fire had also spread into a wooded area at the rear of the property.
The Red Cross provided assistance to the five occupants of the residence.
A total of 16 firefighters and all fire apparatus responded to this incident.
The investigation into the cause and origin of this fire is ongoing.
