Job Description

As the most northerly township in the County of Simcoe, the Township of Tiny offers 70km of coastline along beautiful Georgian Bay. The municipality’s approximate population of 13,000 residents at least doubles in the summer as the region is a popular destination for both tourism and cottagers due to its beautiful waterfront areas and small-town appeal.

The Township of Tiny is currently seeking a qualified candidate for the position of Deputy Fire Chief.

Reporting to the Director of Emergency Services/Fire Chief, the Deputy Fire Chief is responsible for the day-to-day management and administration of the Township of Tiny’s paid on-call Fire and Emergency Services Department. The key areas of responsibility of a paid on-call fire department include providing emergency response leadership, training and apparatus, equipment and station maintenance. This position is responsible for staffing, incident command, completing performance evaluations, procurement coordination, research and policy development, fire cause investigation, budget planning, incident analysis and developing and implementing training. Furthermore, this position is responsible for assuming the duties of the Director of Emergency Services/Fire Chief in their absence, attending Council/Committee meetings, as required, and championing the vision, mission and strategic direction of both the Fire and Emergency Services Department and that of the Township of Tiny in its entirety.

Qualifications

The preferred candidate possesses the following:

  • NFPA 1021 Fire Officer II Certification.
  • NFPA 1041 Fire Instructor II Certification.
  • Post-secondary education in the area of municipal fire protection considered an asset.
  • Minimum five (5) years progressive experience as a senior officer in a fire department.
  • Thorough and demonstrated knowledge of fire protection principles and practices, including emergency mitigation, training delivery, OFM/NFPA standards/guidelines, building construction, fire behaviour, incident management, and apparatus and equipment operation and maintenance.
  • Well-developed analytical, communication, presentation, public/media relations, problem-solving, interpersonal, project/time management, management/supervisory and critical thinking skills.
  • Experience in managing emergency scenes and assessing individual and organizational effectiveness in both emergency and non-emergency activities.
  • Sound knowledge of training standards and program applicable to a paid-on-call fire protection delivery system.
  • Ability to manage multiple objectives and projects concurrently and perform duties in a fast-paced environment.
  • CEMC designation considered an asset.
  • Computer literacy utilizing word-processing, spreadsheet, presentation and database software, the Internet, as well as web and database entry skills.
  • Valid Ontario Class DZ licence and satisfactory Ontario driving abstract.
  • Valid First Aid/CPR certificate or ability to obtain.
  • Satisfactory Police Vulnerable Sector Check.

35 hours per week

Rate of Pay

The Township of Tiny offers a competitive compensation and benefits package. Pay Rate - $50.43 to $63.04 per hour.
