Temporary Alarm Room Operator


The Temporary Alarm Room Operator is responsible for receiving fire and emergency calls and dispatching fire apparatus and personnel.  Your primary focus will be operating console equipment, including telephone, radio and computer-aided dispatch and quickly and accurately analyzing information received from callers to dispatch the required apparatus and personnel in accordance with department work instructions.

You are able to elicit and understand direction and geographic information in a demanding, multi-tasking, team environment. You will perform system tests, maintain accurate records and other communication functions as required, as well as other related duties as assigned.
  • Ideally, you have completed a post-secondary 9-1-1 emergency services communication certificate or diploma program.
  • Ability to perform call taking and radio dispatch duties in an often demanding and stressful emergency environment.
  • Good knowledge of streets and fire station locations in the Town of Ajax and the City of Pickering.
  • Proficient computer skills in MS Office and experience in a Windows environment with demonstrated keyboarding skills of 40 w.p.m.
  • Proven proficient multi-tasking skills.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and precisely in English while under stressful situations (verbal/written).
  • Proven customer service and public relations skills.
  • Must be willing and able to wear a uniform and to work nights, weekends and holidays as scheduled.
  • Ability to provide a current criminal reference check satisfactory to the Town of Ajax.

Duration of temporary employment:

A minimum of 3 months to a maximum of 12 months in duration. 

Salary Range:            $62,667 per year.
