Public Educator - Probationary

 
Position Summary
Reporting to the Chief of Fire Prevention, you will conduct various activities in support of fire prevention, public education, department goals and objectives, and special projects.
 
Key Duties and Responsibilities
  • Development and delivery of community fire and life safety education programs and messages
  • Coordinate fire service participation at special events and programs
  • Assist in the development and maintenance of effective fire and life safety public relation strategies
  • Perform public relations, liaise and collaborate with other City divisions, partner agencies and community organizations
  • Evaluate and approve life safety plans and fire drill scenarios
  • Carry out general inspections and assists with inspection activities 
  • Enforce the Ontario Fire Code
  • Deliver internal training to City and department personnel to raise awareness of fire prevention programs and activities
Education and Experience
  • A post-secondary degree or diploma in Fire and Life Safety Education, Teaching, Communications, Social Media Relations, Marketing, Writing, or related discipline
  • Completion of NFPA 1041 Instructor Program, NFPA 1031 Fire Inspector Program
  • NFPA 1035 Level II Fire and Life Safety Educator Program through the Ontario Fire College or equivalent
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience in a fire service industry directly responsible for the delivery of fire and life safety education
Required Skills/Knowledge
  • Demonstrate aptitude for the delivery of public and life safety education
  • Excellent written and verbal communication/presentation skills
  • Communicates with honesty, openness, respect, and trust
  • Able to present before a large audience (virtual or in person) in a professional manor
  • Excellent organizational skills (e.g., tracking and planning) and ability to work effectively in a team-based environment as well as independently 
  • Must be computer literate and be proficient in use of: word processing and spreadsheet type programs; social media apps (e.g., Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, YouTube, Instagram); software programs related to video editing or graphic design; meeting apps such as Zoom or Microsoft Teams or similar  
  • Demonstrate the City’s corporate values of care, collaboration, courage and service
  • Demonstrate good judgment and excellent customer service skills, acts professionally,  and makes sound decisions
  • Show commitment to personal growth, development, and leadership opportunities

  • Physically able to climb stairs and ladders, kneel, bend and walk for prolonged hours, lift and carry objects of varying weights
