Job Responsibilities:
  • Plan, develop and implement public information/education and awareness programs throughout the municipality.  Coordinate the delivery of fire prevention, emergency planning and life safety programs to schools, community groups, associations and the general public.
  • Coordinate and facilitate the delivery of the Home Fire Safety Awareness Program, School Fire Safety Programs and any other public education campaigns deemed necessary by the Fire Chief.
  • Liaise with and assist in training of Fire Prevention and Fire Suppression personnel assigned to public education and awareness activities and programs.
  • Conduct community risk and statistical analyses in order to determine appropriate public education strategies.  Monitor and evaluate existing programs/initiatives to ensure appropriate objectives, teaching plans, methods and scheduling practices to most effectively meet the needs of the programs. Identify educational and/or training gaps and prepare new programs/initiatives to satisfy these needs.
  • Organize and schedule special events, educational programs, fire station visits and presentations made by on-duty crews.
  • Liaise with the Corporate Communications Department in to develop and maintain an effective media relations strategy.  Coordinate with the Corporate Communications Department to develop media plans, promotions and press releases to fire safety and emergency planning activities (e.g. Fire Prevention Week, Media Day, 12-Days of Fire Safety, etc.).
  • Serve as the Fire Department’s Public Information Officer at public events.  Upon request by the Fire Chief or his/her Designate, serve as the OFD Public Information Officer at emergency incidents.
  • Coordinate maintenance of the Fire Department website with Corporate Communications.
  • Design and implement social media strategy to align with fire safety goals and identified risks in our community.
  • Stay up-to-date with current digital technologies and trends in social media, design tools and applications.
  • Communicate with followers, respond to queries in a timely manner and monitor customer reviews.
  • Compile information and assist in the development of the Fire Department Annual Report and an internal Fire Department newsletter.
  • Establish and pursue fundraising opportunities.
  • Liaise with the Red Cross and Salvation Army in the Personal Disaster Assistance program to help victims of fire and other emergencies.
  • Coordinate requests from other groups or agencies for Fire Department assistance with community events (e.g. food bank, Christmas Toy Drive, Lions and other service clubs), as needed.
  • Undertake special projects as assigned by Fire Management.
  • Other duties as assigned.
  • Experience preparing and delivering presentations in a variety of styles e.g. lectures, interactive sessions and demonstrations.
  • Experience with creating original text and video content, managing posts and responding to followers.
  • Knowledge of and proven experience in adult education and various teaching techniques and methods, including creating lesson plans, guide sheets and use of variety of teaching aids.
  • Strong leadership and motivational skills and proven good judgment.
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to express OFD’s fire safety messaging creatively.
  • Excellent working knowledge of computer and social media related programs.
  • The successful candidate must hold and provide a copy of a valid and unrestricted Ontario Driver’s License Class G minimum with a driving record that demonstrates responsible and safe driving behaviour. Note: Applicants with 6 or more points are ineligible for consideration. The successful applicant, who is a new hire, will be required to provide the Corporation with a current drivers abstract (no older than 30 days) and pass a Town administered road test as a condition of employment.
  • Successful candidates, who are new hires and/or who have not performed in this position previously will be required to provide a satisfactory criminal record check with vulnerable sector screening dated within the last 30 days as a condition of employment.
  • The successful candidate shall be required to complete certification to NFPA Public Educator 1035 Level I and II.
  • The hours of work will be 8:00 am to 4:00 pm Monday to Friday.
