Position Overview:

Under the general guidance and direction of the Chief Fire Prevention Officer, the Fire Life Safety Educator is responsible for creating effective communication strategies and materials to promote awareness and educational programs throughout the City of Vaughan. Additionally, this position is responsible for collaborating with the Fire and Rescue Services and Corporate and Strategic Communications to ensure consistency of information and messaging across all online platforms, which involves researching, coordinating, writing, and editing dynamic and high-quality content for the City’s website, webpages, e-newsletters, online campaigns, and multimedia scripts. Overall, this position plays an integral role in developing, implementing and promoting the Fire Prevention and Public Education branch strategic priorities and raises awareness of the Vaughan Fire & Rescue initiatives, programs, and services.

Qualifications and experience:
 
  • Secondary School Diploma.
  • Completed the requirements for and are certified to teach through the Ontario College of Teachers OR a minimum of a three (3) year university degree or advanced diploma, with a Teaching and Training Adults Certificate/
  • Standard First Aid, CPR Level C, and Automated External Defibrillator (AED) Certifications.
  • Eligibility for and willingness to obtain Fire Prevention based training curriculum from the Ontario Fire College or accredited facility, which includes:
·         NFPA 1031 – Fire Inspector I and II
·         NFPA 1033 – Fire Investigator
·         NFPA 1035 – Fire and Life Safety Educator I, II and PIO
·         NFPA 1041 – Fire Service Instructor
 
  • Previous educating experience an asset.
  • Standard First Aid, CPR Level C, and Automated External Defibrillator (AED) Certifications.
  • General knowledge of the following legislation, regulations, or requirements:
·         Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (AODA)
·         Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA)
·         Copyright Act
·         Ontario Highway Traffic Act
·         Ontario Human Rights Code
·         Workplace Safety Insurance Act
·         Electrical Safety Authority (ESA)
·         Fire Protection and Prevention Act
·         Technical Standards and Safety Authority (TSSA)
·         Office of the Fire Marshal Guidelines-Fire Marshal’s Directives-Provincial Offences Act
·         Ontario Building Code Act (OBCA)
·         Ontario Fire Code
 
  • Working knowledge in the development of media releases and working with the media.
  • Working knowledge of budget management principles as well as grant writing and funding requests.
  • Working knowledge of the technical aspects of alarm, detection and voice communication systems, elevators, sprinkler systems, fire pumps, water supplies, hazardous materials, smoke and ventilation fire sciences, emergency electrical power and other factors related to fire protection.
  • Demonstrated ability to maintain a high standard of public relations.
  • Ability to communicate and present information while public speaking to a wide range of internal and external contacts using the appropriate medium to diverse audiences.
  • Ability to communicate information in both technical and user-friendly languages.
  • Ability to ensure consistency in and accuracy of information.
  • Ability to identify the educational/training needs of others; develop formal educational/training programs; and teach or instruct others.
  • Ability to exercise discretion and judgment in order to make sound decisions under tight timelines/deadline or while managing multiple project or conflicting priorities.
  • Knowledge of and demonstrated ability in the City’s core competencies.
  • Valid Ontario Class “G” Driver’s License in good standing.
  • Successful candidate will be required to submit a clear Vulnerable Sector Check, prior to commencing employment.
  • Standard office environment.
  • Travel to various facilities and centres.
  • Interactions with the public, community partners, City departments, various divisions within VFRS and other levels of government.
  • Ability to work outside of normal business hours, as required, and in accordance with the collective agreement.
