Fire Inspector - Probationary

Position Summary
Reporting to the Captains of Prevention, the Fire Inspector is responsible for educating, promoting, interpreting and enforcing applicable fire safety codes, legislation, regulations and by-laws ensuring buildings, businesses and residential occupancies are in compliance with the Ontario Fire Code and Ontario Building Code.
Key Duties and Responsibilities
  • Conduct fire inspections of all types of buildings to enforce fire code compliance with all applicable legislation and standards
  • Issue orders requiring compliance with regulations
  • Review fire safety plans/specifications
  • Conduct fire investigations
  • Prepare/maintain related reports, records, statistics and correspondence
  • Lay charges respecting violations of codes / provincial regulations and provide evidence in court proceedings.
  • Provide technical support and training for department personnel
  • Liaise with fire protection professionals
Education and Experience
  • Post-secondary degree or diploma in Fire Protection Technology, Building Construction, Architecture, Engineering or equivalent
  • NFPA 1031 Fire Inspector Level I or working towards, OR an equivalent combination of related education and experience
  • Register in QuARTS for Fire Protection component would be an asset
Required Skills/Knowledge
  • Demonstrated aptitude for fire prevention/inspection and public fire and life safety
  • Proficient with Building and Fire Codes, related regulations and legislation
  • Ability to interpret building plans and drawings and understand construction details and features together with industrial/manufacturing processes
  • Excellent blueprint reading abilities
  • Proficient in the use of MS Office (e.g. Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook), Internet, and fire department management software (e.g. Firehouse) etc.
  • Excellent written, verbal and presentation skills, a commitment to customer service excellence and the ability to communicate with honesty, openness, respect, and trust

  • Candidates must have a valid Class “G” driver’s License in good standing.
  • Be legally entitled to work in Canada
  • Requires satisfactory Police Vulnerable Sector Check
  • Physically able to climb stairs and ladders; kneel, bend and walk for prolonged hours; lift and carry objects of varying weights
