The Municipality of Sioux Lookout is seeking a progressive, professional leader to join our team as the Fire Chief/Emergency Services Manager. Reporting to the Chief Administrative Officer (CAO), this position provides sound leadership to Sioux Lookout/Hudson Fire Department and is responsible for the planning, direction, oversight and implementation of fire protection programs and services provided by the Municipality. As a member of the Senior Management Team, the Fire Chief/Emergency Services Manager will help shape the future of the Municipality of Sioux Lookout by championing the Corporation’s mission, vision and values while cultivating a respectful workplace culture built on honesty, integrity, accountability and respect.
 

The Fire Chief/Emergency Services Manager oversees a volunteer staff of approximately 30 members and a part-time Administrative Assistant.

We are seeking the ideal candidate who is a dynamic leader and is able to establish and sustain effective relationships within the department, across the organization and with external stakeholders to ensure a safe, sustainable Municipality. The Fire Chief ensures appropriate interpretation and application of legislation, standards, codes, and by-laws; ensures incident command and/or incident management system is implemented at emergency scenes for the Sioux Lookout/Hudson Fire Department. The Fire Chief also serves as the Community Emergency Management Coordinator for the Municipality of Sioux Lookout and is responsible for the development and implementation of emergency planning for the Municipality of Sioux Lookout in compliance with relevant legislation.

Desired qualifications include:

  • Post-secondary education in Emergency Services Management, Fire Administration or relevant professional discipline;
  • Minimum of five (5) years of progressively responsible leadership experience in fire and rescue services;
  • Certification in NFPA 1021 Fire Officer I & II, NFPA 1031 Fire Inspector I, NFPA 1035 Public Education I and NFPA 1041 Fire Instructor I or Grandfathered to the same level, with experience in all areas of fire services including fire prevention, public education, investigations, code enforcement, communications, mechanical, fire suppression and emergency response;
  • NFPA 1021 Fire Officer III and IV or Humber Fire Services Executive Management Certificate would be considered an asset;
  • Community Emergency Management Coordinator designation or the ability to achieve designation within 12 months of employment;
  • Demonstrated provision of strong leadership in emergency situations and have the flexibility to operate outside of normal working hours or on a rotational on call basis;
  • Demonstrated strong administrative skills; development and management of capital and operating budgets; departmental reporting; supervisory experience;
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and oral including ability to author comprehensive reports and deliver presentations to a variety of audiences including City Council;
  • Excellent computer skills with Microsoft Applications and social media platforms;   
  • Satisfactory background check (at the applicant’s expense) prior to start date; and,
  • Satisfactory driver’s abstract, with a valid Class ‘DZ’ driver’s license and First Aid/CPR Certification.
