The Municipality of Mississippi Mills is an urban and rural municipality with a population of approximately 13,500 located in the County of Lanark. 

The Municipality is currently seeking a full-time Fire Chief. The Fire Department includes two fire stations and is served full time by a Deputy Fire Chief, a Fire Prevention/Training Officer, 42 volunteer firefighters, as well as a full time Administrative Assistant.

Position Summary:

The Fire Chief is responsible for the overall management and operation of the Fire Department including fire prevention, fire suppression, emergency response, training, Fire Code enforcement, and public education/community relations. The position is also responsible for the Municipality’s emergency management program serving as the Community Emergency Management Coordinator. The Fire Chief provides leadership and technical expertise regarding the development and implementation of service levels, policies and long-range strategies, operating and capital budgets, and participates as a member of the senior management team.

Main Qualifications:

  • Post Secondary degree/diploma in a related program (ie Business/Public Administration), preferably in fire service administration or a closely related field and/or a combination of relevant education and experience
  • Minimum seven (7) years of progressive fire service experience and a minimum three (3) years of experience in a supervisory or management level position
  • Extensive knowledge of fire suppression and prevention principles, techniques and equipment
  • Knowledge/experience of the principles and practices involved in training personnel
  • Extensive knowledge of the operation and maintenance of Fire Apparatus and equipment
  • Knowledge of building construction, HVAC systems as well as electrical and plumbing systems a preferred asset
  • Extensive knowledge and experience with Incident Command procedures
  • NFPA 1021 Fire Officer Level IV
  • Certification in Community Emergency Management
  • Computer proficiency including demonstrated knowledge of Microsoft Windows and Office applications
  • Thorough knowledge of firefighting and emergency response, first aid and first response medical procedures, applicable legislative/regulatory standards, budget formulation, local government functions / responsibilities, health and safety and employee relations principles and practices
  • Excellent research, analysis and policy development skills
  • Highly developed collaborative skills, a strong sense of public service and an ability to direct, manage and control a fire services operation
  • Strong communication (written and oral), analytical, report-writing, problem solving, presentation, public relations, strategic planning, organizational, project / time management, training, leadership and supervisory skills
  • Ability to demonstrate tact and discretion in handling matters of a confidential or politically sensitive nature and to maintain confidentiality
  • Ability to foster good rapport and cooperative working relationships and to champion the corporate mission and values
  • Possess a valid DZ Driver’s License in good standing
  • Criminal Records Check with Vulnerable Sector Screening
