Job Profile
Reporting to the Fire Chief within the Administration Division of the Cambridge Fire Department, the primary functions associated with this position include the following, but are not limited to:
 
What You Will Be Doing
  • Establishes policies, operating procedures, work methods and standards for firefighting, training and equipment, facilities maintenance, health and wellness, leadership and empowerment of staff.
  • Provide input into establishment of long term direction and strategic orientation for the Fire Department.
  • Provides leadership for Suppression, Training and Mechanical divisions and assists in recommendations for continuous improvement efforts.
  • Supervises matters of recruitment, training schedules and represents the Department in contract negotiations.
  • Develops and monitors budget for the Suppression, Training and Mechanical divisions.
  • Reviews firefighting reports to the Fire Marshal's Office.
  • Reviews, amends, create and enforce Standard Operating Guidelines for the Department.
  • Commands staff during firefighting and emergency situations.
  • Performs public relations tasks with media contacts and administration prevention programs.
  • Researches material requirements of department and recommends product specifications.
  • Ensure employees work in compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act, regulations, and Corporate Health and Safety Policies and Procedures, and to take every reasonable precaution to protect the workers.
  • Acts as back-up to the Fire Chief and Deputy Chief of Administration.

Education
In addition to completion of the Company Officer Diploma Program, or Fire Officer 2 or equivalent, you also possess:
  • Post-Secondary college diploma or university degree in Fire Service Administration; or
  • Degree in Public Administration, Social or Natural Sciences; or
  • Equivalent combination of education and experience in a closely related field.
Experience and Knowledge
  • Management experience that includes superior leadership of others in a unionized environment.
  • Proven ability to provide effective command over firefighting staff.
  • Ability to work with elected and non-elected officials and staff at all levels.
  • Minimum 10 years of progressively responsible fire service experience with at least six (6) years at the officer rank where you have gained technical operations expertise, knowledge of applicable legislation, codes, standards and have applied best practices.
  • Demonstrated commitment to professional development attaining additional certification in related areas (e.g. training and development, management and fire services).

Proof of your current and valid certificate(s) and/or educational qualifications.
Supervisor Health and Safety Awareness Training Certificate from the Ministry of Labour (may be obtained post offer).
 
Your compensation
This position is located in Band Level #10 and has an annual salary range of $126,860 to $154,705 (2019 Rate). We offer a comprehensive benefit package and are an Ontario Municipal Employees Retirement System (OMERS) employer.
 
Hours of work
Monday to Friday, 8:30am to 4:30pm (35 hours per week)
