We are seeking a highly motivated, visionary leader to fill the senior position of Deputy Fire Chief, Operational Support & Community Safety, a portfolio that involves leading and overseeing the City’s Fire Prevention and Public Education programs and our Community Risk Assessment. Reporting to the Fire Chief, you’ll provide strategic leadership, through subordinate management, to a multi-functional workforce engaged in the delivery of Fire and Emergency Services, and recommend broad policies and long-range strategies in service delivery to meet mandated goals and objectives, all in alignment with the City of Hamilton’s risk profile and the Department’s 10-Year Fire Service Delivery Plan.

Leading by example, you’ll establish and achieve operational goals and objectives through the effective and efficient use of financial and staff resources, and use a "best practices" approach in developing and delivering quality services in a timely, cost-effective manner, while modelling and instilling a customer service focus throughout the Department.

Your qualifications for the role of Director / Deputy Fire Chief include:

  • Proven knowledge of management principles, practices and theories in the direct delivery of firefighting services.
  • A post-secondary degree/diploma in Business, Public Administration or a related field, OR an acceptable equivalent combination of education, training and experience in the execution and management of a composite Fire Department, an asset.
  • Graduation from the Ontario Fire College, preferred.
  • Emergency planning and preparedness training, preferred.
  • Confirmed Fire Officer, an asset.
  • Competency in the use of all equipment and techniques utilized at emergency responses.
  • Highly developed analytical and business-planning skills, with a proven track record for long-term visioning and big-picture thinking.
  • Highly developed ability to articulate a vision, and lead and inspire others with steadfast integrity.
  • Highly effective leadership, coaching, facilitation, communication, interpersonal and organizational skills in a predominantly unionized environment.
  • Strong communication skills, both verbally and in writing.
  • Demonstrated experience in the design and delivery of customer-focused programs and services.
  • Demonstrated ability to deal effectively with elected officials, other government officials, management, union representatives, peers, staff and the general public.
  • Thorough knowledge and understanding of statutes, regulations and by-laws affecting the Division/Section.
  • A working knowledge of the Fire Protection and Prevention Act (Bill 84), the Ontario Fire Code, the Building Code, Fire Prevention Regulations, the Occupational Health & Safety Act, building design and construction, the municipal water supply and the geography of the municipality.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the Occupational Health & Safety Act and applicable regulations as it relates to the position.
  • A strong work ethic and professional competency.
  • Physical capabilities to respond to emergencies and work on emergency scenes.
  • Thorough knowledge of the collective bargaining process.
  • Ability to effectively facilitate grievance procedures.
  • Willingness to participate in Corporate Task Forces and ad hoc work groups/committees, as required.
  • Ability to monitor all budgets within the Fire Division and assist the Fire Chief with budget preparation and management.
  • Computer literacy in the current suite of Microsoft Office applications such as Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
  • Proven ability to effectively negotiate complex agreements, and excellent facilitation skills to build consensus.
  • A valid Class “G” driver’s licence; proof thereof is required after hire.

This regular, full-time position offers a salary range of $76.141 - $97.476 per hour.
