Welland building fires deliberately set, police say
The Standard

Two deliberately set fires earlier this week in the Rose City are under investigation, Niagara Regional Police said Friday.

Welland Fire and Emergency Services and police were called to 159 Southworth St. N. on Tuesday at 6 a.m. for report of a building fire.

They were again called to the location on Thursday, again at 6 a.m., for a more involved fire.

"It's an ongoing investigation," said fire Chief Brian Kennedy.

He said fire prevention officers and police detectives are working together on the investigation and that both fires were on the exterior of the building.

"We contacted the Ontario Fire Marshal's Office but they did not come down for this."

Police detectives have reason to believe in both instances that the fires were deliberately set.

Both Kennedy and police said anyone with information or any witnesses should call 905-688-4111, dial option 4, ext. 3300.
